Kala Art Institute Residency Award by Carol Elkovich

I am beginning a residency to explore wood block printmaking with my viral series and the geography series at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, CA this week and for the next three months. I was fortunate to be awarded the Sustainable Arts Grant. It is an award specifically given to artists with children. That they have such a grant is amazingly generous for those of us who balance our studio time with parenting (and all those other necessary pursuits). Kala also has great classes for children and teenagers, camps, etc. available for local kids. However, it is also a well-appointed professional studio that attracts artists worldwide. It is exciting to be around an international community of artists doing a variety of traditional and digital printmaking.  I will post work when I get something I like from their presses.

Kala Art Institute's mission is to help artists sustain their creative work over time through its Artist-in- Residence and Fellowship Programs, and to engage the community through exhibitions, public programs and education. Kala's high quality printmaking and multimedia studios are located in Berkeley, CA.

San Jose Institute for Contemporary Art by Carol Elkovich

Executive Director and Chief Curator, Cathy Kimball of ICA chose my work for the Left Coast Annual juried show out in Pacifica, CA at the Sanchez Art Center. It was a competitive process and I was pleased to have the opportunity to install one of my Viral pieces there. Meeting her was fascinating to hear about the curatorial process and enlightening to hear her take on my work

FYI artists: membership is affordable to the institute and the artist members page provides links to your website. There are some great shows coming up on the ICA calendar, worth a visit.

San Jose Institute for Contemporary Art

Sanchez Art Center by Carol Elkovich

I have a piece in Left Coast Annual at the Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica, CA. The show was curated by Cathy Kimball curator of the San Jose Institute for Contemporary Art. With only 49 pieces in the show selected from around 900 entries, the work is top-notch and fascinating to see the collection chosen by Ms. Kimball. The artists gave statements about their work and engaged in conversation with the curator during the talk on Sunday and it was enlightening to hear about the curatorial process. The show runs through May 17, 2015.

Whitney Biennial Tony Tasset piece by Carol Elkovich

I was excited to see name listed on this piece! -- The multicolored acrylic panels that adorn Tasset’s Artists Monument are etched with the names of 392,486 modern and contemporary artists, ranging from Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol to emerging artists with a single exhibition to their credit.
